EMMETSBURG, Iowa — October 15, 2026 — Emmetsburg Community School District is growing. The district is serving nearly 27 more students this school year than last, bringing total enrollment to 712 students across its buildings.

The increase comes at a time when many rural Iowa districts are seeing enrollment hold flat or decline, making the gain a welcome sign for the district and the Emmetsburg community.

"Families are choosing Emmetsburg, and that means a great deal to us," said Cory Jenness, Superintendent of Emmetsburg Community School District. "It reflects the dedication and hard work of our teachers and staff, the strength of our programs, and the support of community members who believe in schools now and in the future. We're excited to welcome every one of these new E-Hawks."

Enrollment is a key factor in Iowa school funding, so the added students help strengthen the district's financial footing and support continued investment in classrooms, programs and staff.

"Growth like this doesn't happen by accident," said Kyle Caven, president of the Emmetsburg Community School District Board of Education. "It's the result of a shared commitment from our staff, families and taxpayers to give every student a strong education close to home. The board is proud of this progress, and we'll keep working to make Emmetsburg a place where families want to be."

The growth comes as the district asks voters to consider a $25 million general obligation bond on the November ballot to build a new elementary school. Today, the district's youngest learners attend West Elementary, where classroom wings date to 1950 and 1959. The proposed school would sit north of College Drive, across from Iowa Lakes Community College. The district paid off its previous bond early and carries no outstanding bond debt; the proposal carries a tax rate of $2.70 per $1,000 of taxable value.
