Eight graders Hannah and Celia present their National History Day project to help sophomores visualize topics for their Evolution Solution research papers.
National History Day (NHD) is a nonprofit organization that creates opportunities for teachers and students to engage in historical research through an innovative curriculum framework. Students learn history by selecting topics of interest and launching them into year-long research projects. The mission of NHD is to improve the teaching and learning of history in middle and high school.
7th and 8th-grade Extended Learning students from Emmetsburg Middle School have worked on projects all year around the 2021 NHD theme of “Communication in History: The Key to Understanding.” Students began research in October and chose their topics by November. Each student found at least 25 primary and secondary sources during December to understand the topics. In January, students created annotated bibliographies to demonstrate the depth of their research. After writing thesis statements, procuring images, and carefully crafting text, students created exhibit boards to showcase the research completed for their topics. Because the district competition was not in-person due to COVID, students made a Google Slides presentation to virtually present their projects. Students submitted their projects to be judged at the Spirit Lake district competition on February 22.
All students’ projects were AMAZING, and the growth and learning that took place throughout the process made this a valuable learning experience. Mrs. Saxton is so proud of the hard work and dedication of all students. A big congratulations go to Ava Dietrich for advancing to the state level with her project, “Jane Elliott: Placing an Eye on Racism.” Ava’s project was one of two junior individual exhibits selected to advance to state from the Spirit Lake district.
All 7th and 8th-grade Extended Learning students will showcase their National History Day projects on either Tuesday, March 16, or Thursday, March 18, from 4:30-5:45 pm in the student center.
No School Monday March 15, 2021 due to Winter Storm Warning. It will be a Virtual Learning Day.
